Understanding PIP Insurance and How It Covers Your Treatment

If you’ve been injured in a car accident in Washington State, you’ve probably heard the term PIP insurance — but what is it, and how does it actually help you get treatment?

At Quam Chiropractic and Massage, many of our patients use PIP to cover their chiropractic and massage care after an accident. The process is simpler than you think, and knowing your rights makes all the difference in your recovery.

What Is PIP Insurance?

PIP stands for Personal Injury Protection. It’s a type of no-fault car insurance coverage that helps pay for your medical bills, lost wages, and other related expenses—regardless of who caused the accident.

In Washington, PIP is automatically included in your auto policy unless you signed a waiver to reject it. If you’re not sure whether you have it, you can check your insurance declarations page or call your agent.

What Does PIP Cover?

Here’s what PIP insurance can typically pay for after a car accident:

  • Chiropractic care
  • Massage therapy
  • Medical appointments
  • Physical therapy
  • Medications
  • Diagnostic imaging (X-rays, MRIs, etc.)
  • Lost wages if you’re unable to work
  • Transportation to medical appointments
  • Household services (like cleaning or childcare) if you’re temporarily disabled

Most Washington policies provide $10,000 in medical benefits, though some offer higher limits.

Do I Need a Referral to Use PIP?

No referral is needed. You can begin treatment at Quam Chiropractic and Massage immediately. We work directly with your insurance company and take care of the billing so you don’t have to deal with the paperwork or stress.

What If I Wasn’t at Fault?

It doesn’t matter who caused the accident—PIP covers you either way. That’s what makes it different from liability insurance. Even if you were a passenger or a pedestrian, PIP may still apply.

If your accident was caused by someone else, your PIP coverage will kick in first. Later, your insurance company may seek reimbursement from the at-fault driver’s insurance.

How Long Do I Have to Use My PIP?

PIP coverage typically remains available for up to 3 years after the accident or until the benefit limit is reached. However, the sooner you start care, the better. Waiting too long can raise questions with your insurance or weaken your legal case if you’re pursuing one.

Will You Help With Insurance Billing?

Yes. Our team is experienced in handling PIP claims, coordinating with attorneys, and managing your treatment records. All you have to focus on is getting better—we handle the rest.
